Dr. Akhil Saji, MD
Dr. Saji is a fellowship-trained urologist at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He treats both male and female patients with a spectrum of urologic concerns. Dr. Saji’s fellowship focus is on robotic surgery and urologic oncology including kidney cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, and other genitourinary malignancies. Dr. Saji also has expertise in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH/enlarged prostates) and kidney stones.
Dr. Saji graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree with honors in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He subsequently completed medical school at New York Medical College and residency at New York Medical College affiliated with Westchester Medical Center, New York Health and Hospitals System, and Hackensack University Medical Center. After completion of residency training, Dr. Saji completed a fellowship in robotic urologic oncology at Keck Hospital of the University of Southern California (USC) with world-renowned Dr. Indirbir Gill, Monish Aron, Mihir Desai, Hooman Djaladat and other faculty members.
Throughout his urology training, Dr. Saji cared for patients across many hospitals in both New York and Southern California gaining widespread expertise in the whole spectrum of urologic care ranging from oncology, robotic surgery, BPH, kidney stones, urologic trauma, female urology, and pediatric urology. Furthermore, he has presented at numerous urology conferences including the American Urological Association (AUA) national conference, the NARUS (North American Robotic Urology Symposium) conference, the World Congress of Endourology (WCET) conference, and many others. From these presentations, he has published over 13 abstracts and 10 peer-reviewed publications on various urologic conditions.
After training, Dr. Saji began working at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, after being recruited by the world-renowned robotic surgeon Dr. James Porter and his former co-resident and friend Dr. Rogerio Huang.
Dr. Saji’s interests include continually seeking to advance minimally invasive surgery and improving treatment outcomes for both benign and cancerous urologic conditions. Dr. Saji specializes in several robotic surgeries that may be used to treat your conditions. These include but are not limited to robotic partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer, robotic nerve-sparing prostatectomy for prostate cancer, robotic simple prostatectomy for enlarged prostates, and robotic radical cystectomy with urinary diversion for bladder cancer. Dr. Saji also has specialized training in the da Vinci single port robotics platform where entire operations can be performed through one single 1.5 inch incision facilitating decreased pain and faster recovery after surgery. Other areas of expertise include aquablation for BPH, focal therapy treatment for prostate cancer, and MRI plus ultrasound fusion prostate biopsies.
Dr. Saji enjoys speaking with patients and their families about the urologic conditions affecting their health and will work extensively with you to find the right treatment modalities to facilitate a longer and healthier life.
